Straits Times Index

The Straits Times Index (STI) is a Singapore benchmark index in the Singapore stock market. The STI tracks the performance of the top 30 listed companies on the Singapore Exchange, therefore it is often used as a barometer for Singapore's economy.

Let me try to explain with an analogy (hopefully its good).

Suppose there is a class of 100 students. The highest scores of 20 students were chosen and the average score were recorded over each exam.

If in one exam, out of 100 marks and passing mark of 50, the average score of those 20 students is 96, this means that the examination is easy. The remaining 80 students are expected to score well too under such a situation of an easy paper. If they don't, then the problem lies with their own fundamentals. So, the class's performance in the exam in overall, is great.

If in one exam, out of 100 marks and passing mark of 50, the average score of those 20 students is 54, this means that the examination is difficult. Since the average score of 54 shows that even the 20 best performing students are barely struggling to pass the exam, we can't expect much from the remaining 80 students. So, the class's performance in the exam in overall, is bad.
